Quince Varieties in Australia

Quince - Scientific name: Cydonia oblonga. Family: Rosaceae. Native to warm-temperate southwest Asia in the Caucasus region. Four other species previously included in the genus Cydonia are now treated in separate genera. These are the Chinese quince Pseudocydonia sinensis, a native of China, and the three flowering quinces of eastern Asia in the genus Chaenomeles.

Appleshaped:
Matures mid-season, Medium, short pear-shaped, good quality, Turns yellowish when cooked.

Champion:
Large, golden yellow, pear shaped fruit with a mild flavour. Excellent when preserved. The flesh becomes a beautiful dark red when cooked and the conserve, quince jelly, is one of the best. A very hardy small tree that thrives and bears well.
Chinese Quince:
Small tree with ornamental bark. Pink blossoms in spring, followed by large yellow quince fruits up to 18 -20 cm long. Semi -evergreen. Leaves turn red, bronze and yellow in autumn.
De Bourgeaut:
Late ripening. Medium large, pear-shaped fruit.nDeep pink when cooked.
De Vranja:
Large, long pear-shaped, good quality, Early to mid season ripening, turns pink when cooked.
Fuller’s:
Mid to late season ripening, turns pale pink when cooked. Medium-large, pear-shaped.

Master’s Early:
Late ripening, turns pink when cooked. Medium-large, pear-shaped.
Missouri Mammoth:
Early-ripening. Large, round fruit , turns pale pink when cooked.
Mummery’s Seedling:
Mid to late season ripening, turns pale pink when cooked. Large, pear-shaped, good quality.
Orange:
Medium, pear-shaped, good quality, Ripens mid season, turns pink when cooked.
Pineapple:
Medium, pear-shaped, good quality. Ripens mid to late season. Pale pink when cooked.
Portugal:
Early to mid season ripening. Medium, pear-shaped fruit. Turns pale pink when cooked.
Powell’s Prize:
Early to mid season ripening. Small, pear-shaped fruit. Turns pink when cooked.
Rea's Mammoth:
Large, short pear-shaped fruit. Turns pink when cooked. Ripens mid season.
Smyrna:
A Turkish variety with extremely large fruit, light yellow flesh and bright yellow skin. It can be grown as an attractive tree (or multi-stemmed shrub) and has dark green foliage and a very showy bloom. Turns pale pink when cooked.
Van Deman:
Very late ripening. Medium, pear-shaped fruit. Turns orange when cooked.
