Heritage Fruits Society: Cherry (Prunus avium & Prunus cerasus) varieties in Australia

Sweet cherries (Prunus avium) are more common in Australia than sour cherries (Prunus cerasus). The sweet cherry tree, if left unpruned, will reach around 10m tall, with a 5-6m spread. The sour cherry tree is smaller, about 4m tall, and bushier.
Bird Cherry (Prunus padus), Portuguese Cherry Laurel (Prunus lusitanic), Capulin Cherry (Prunus salicifolia)
and Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) are also grown here.
Non-prunus fruits commonly called 'cherries' grown in Australia include Barbados Cherry, Acerola Cherry, Brazilian Cherry, Cedar Bay Cherry, Cherry of the Rio Grande, Brush Cherry, Brunei Cherry, Magenta Cherry, Scrub Cherry and the bush-foods River Cherry and Purple Cherry.
