Here are some tips for getting your freshly grafted-tree off to a great start:
Only handle the tree by the rootstock, which is the part below the tape.
As soon as you arrive home, hydrate the tree roots in a bucket of water or dilute seaweed solution for ten minutes.
Before planting, cut and remove any damaged roots and plant as soon as possible. If you do not have a final destination ready, put it in a pot with soil.
Leave the grafting tape on for a minimum of twelve weeks.
Only remove the grafting tape if it is tied on. This should be after new buds and leaves have appeared from the scion. There should be no gaps or looseness around the graft.
To remove the tape, use clean tools to cut it. Be gentle when unwinding it, and avoid pulling too hard.
Keep an eye on the graft union site for healthy active growth. Remove any shoots growing below the graft.
